Matthias Goerne Completes Schubert Cycle, Sings at White Light Festival
Coming in November on harmonia mundi, Matthias Goerne's highly acclaimed Schubert Edition series concludes with a powerful account of Winterreise. The mood here is tense, urgent, even harrowing, as this winter landscape expects no spring to come. In the intimate atmosphere of this recording, more than in concert, Goerne's path to oblivion finds its echo in our innermost selves. Pianist Christoph Eschenbach provides superb accompaniment.
Goerne has captivated audiences worldwide with his complete commitment to the composer and text. The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote that Goerne is "the most intellectually and vocally gifted male art-song interpreter of his generation," and in its review of Schubert's "Erlkonig," Gramophone wrote, that "no singer today cares more than Goerne for the beauty and eloquence of Schubert's melodies." U.S. audiences will get the chance to see Matthias Goerne in concert on November 6 and 8 in Dallas at the Meyerson Symphony Center and on November 11 in New York for the local premiere of William Kentridge's mixed media production of Schubert's "Wintereisse" at Lincoln Center's White Light Festival.
"For rapt inwardness and scrupulous care for tone production and a seamless legato line, Goerne has no equal today…no singer cares more than Goerne for the beauty and eloquence of Schubert’s melodies."
"There is no question that Goerne is among the elite singers of our time. He seems to keep getting better as this series continues."
