Following on their successful and widely acclaimed releases of Vivaldi's La Cetra and La Stravaganza, Rachel Podger and her ensemble Brecon Baroque present L'estro armonico, available March 10th on Channel Classics.
L'estro armonico, the title of Vivaldi's first published collection of concertos, is commonly translated into English as "harmonic fancy." However, the seventeenth century Latin "oestrus" actually means "heat, stimulus, vehement impulse or frenzy" — a better allusion to the startling passion and energy of these twelve concertos, which are widely considered to be among the most influential Baroque orchestral music ever written. This performance captures all of the vitality and freshness of Vivaldi's invention: its rhythmic energy, melodic and harmonic intensity, textural sensuousness, technical brilliance and dramatic flair.
Rachel Podger kicks off her new release March 11th at Bing Concert Hall in Stanford, CA leading the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra in a virtuosic all-Vivaldi program. Vivaldi is also the centerpiece of her Juilliard415 debut on March 19th. In June Podger returns as soloist for two all-Bach concerts with Masaaki Suzuki leading Juilliard415 and the Royal Academy of Music at Alice Tully Hall and the Boston Early Music Festival. Rachel Podger has made more than twenty recordings for Channel Classics, now in its 25th Anniversary year. In February, she became the first female recipient of the the prestigious Royal Academy of Music Bach Prize.
"There is an unfailing elegance in all Rachel Podger does..."
