Donizetti's "Les Martyrs" Out May 12, Making-Of Video Part Two
Donizetti's rarely heard opera Les Martyrs has received an exciting new recording by Sir Mark Elder and the Orchestra of The Age of Enlightenment, starring Joyce El-Khoury, Michael Spyres and David Kempster. The new release is available on May 12 on Opera Rara and presents the grand opera in its original form for the first time in over 150 years, based on a new critical edition by Dr. Flora Willson, which restores the original French text and numerous musical passages.
The recording was recently featured in The Sunday Times and in a nice piece in The Financial Times on Opera Rara, "an extraordinary record label established to rescue neglected masterpieces from obscurity...Before recording an opera, 'it first has to decide whether or not it's a masterpiece and why it has been neglected. It does this through forensic, almost archaeological research and historical analysis' of why it fell from favour...
"For Donizetti's Les Martyrs...it took a team of musicologists and post-doctoral students almost five years to transform 400 pages of manuscript into the 850-page score that the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment played".
Here is episode two of the behind-the-scenes video from the Les Martyrs rehearsal.
Les Martyrs soprano Joyce El-Khoury performs Emmeline for several dates beginning June 13 at The Opera Theater of St. Louis in Missouri.
"galvanising, period-instrument playing...Michael Spyres sings stylishly as Polyeucte...Joyce El-Khoury is his silvery-toned Pauline"
- 4 Stars, The Financial Times
"Michael Spyres sings the hugely demanding role of [Polyeucte] with Joyce El-Khoury lovely as his distraught wife Pauline and Brindley Sherratt profound as his father-in-law Felix...a musical landmark"
- The Independent
